What’s a worse chore than cleaning your gutters?

Cleaning your gutters in the rain because it’s clogged and water is gushing over the sides of your eavestroughing, sheeting down the side of your house and pooling around your foundation. Or you’ve found water seeping through your ceiling or dripping around your windows casings on the inside of your house. Even worse? Facing the repair bills to fix this type of damage.

Avoid this scenario by prepping your home before the rainy season hits. Focus on gutter cleaning, gutter maintenance, roof moss removal and roof cleaning.

Home prep steps for the rainy season

  1. Gutter cleaning
  2. Gutter maintenance
  3. Roof moss removal
  4. Roof cleaning

Gutter cleaning & gutter maintenance

Your gutter’s entire purpose is to guide water off your house and deliver it safely to the ground where it can do no damage.

Clean your gutters by removing leaves, pine needles, twigs, branches and any other debris along the entire length. Ensure the downspouts are free from clogs and water flows unimpeded.

The outside of your gutter won’t cause clogs no matter how dirty it gets, but it does affect the look, or curb appeal, of your house (particularly if you’re trying to sell). Give it a good scrub to remove dirt, grime and organic stains from algae and mildew.

A gutter maintenance plan involves a thorough check that everything is working as it should.

Ensure that every section of gutter is attached to the next, and the whole system is securely fastened to the fascia. Check that downspouts are firmly connected and successfully funneling water to the ground. Remove and replace rusted-out or broken pieces.

Roof moss removal & roof cleaning

Roof moss doesn’t just make your house look uncared-for. It actually damages it. Moss holds water and when it freezes it expands. So, just like a freezing bottle pushes liquid up through the opening, icy moss pushes under your shingles, loosening and opening them up to the elements.

Then more water gets in, allowing more moss to grow, which leads to roof leaks and rot. It used to be a small problem, and now it's a big problem.

So remove moss build-up from your roof regularly. At the same time, remove other debris like twigs, branches, and other organics that can damage the shingles and clog gutters.

These are the 4 steps you need to take to shore up your home’s defences and minimise flood damage. It sounds like a lot, especially if your gutters and roof have been neglected for some time. It’s also time-consuming and risky. But it’s doable.

If you don’t want to tackle it yourself, for whatever reason, don’t hesitate to call a professional. You'll find your time, health, and peace-of-mind are worth it.
