What Is The Best Time of Year for Roof Moss Removal?

The best time of year for roof moss removal is anytime starting in April through October, or, spring through to fall. The weather is more pleasant to work in, and the work is safer without snow and ice to worry about. 

So that leaves a pretty big window for getting it done. As for what is the best time during those three seasons, that depends on a few factors.

Spring

Moss grows very slowly over winter, but once the temperature starts to warm up, growth picks up rapidly. It’s aided, of course, by all the rain we get here on the coast. Spring is a good time for roof cleaning in general to get rid of debris built up from the winter, so it makes sense to combine it with roof moss removal too. You can reduce the spread of moss by taking it off at this time of year. But since it’s usually wet, it’s not the safest time to do it.

Summer

Summer is also a great time to get rid of moss growing on your roof. The weather is hot and dry which sends moss into a dormant state. Removing in at this time not only gets rid of established colonies, but also catches new growths started by spores blowing about in the spring. As long as you’re mindful of the heat, this is the safest period to work in as well.

Fall

Fall is another optimal period to schedule roof cleaning and moss removal. Since moss does keep growing over winter, albeit more slowly, removing it at this time prevents it becoming established over the colder months. Additionally, it’s the freeze/thaw cycle of waterlogged moss that does a lot of damage to a roof. So if you’ve got some moss, getting rid of it right before winter is a smart choice.
